Mae’s BFF

December 12, 2012

December 12, 2012

I’m way behind with posting images. I have them all, I just need to scan them. I’ll do that and insert them properly so everything flows fine – but I don’t want to get any further behind — so I’ll put up yesterday’s image and catch up when I can.

As I type this, our boiler is leaking AGAIN. Two nights ago (actually around 2AM), I heard something dripping in the boiler room and when I opened the door there was water everywhere. I won’t go into details — but $400 later it was suppose to be fixed. Uh – no. And now, I’m waiting for the tech to call me back – I’ve been waiting 2 hours — and the boiler is leaking… I’m just plain frustrated — and — I have a wicked cold to top things off. I’m really tired of house issues right now.

Oh — this image. Yeah, I almost forgot. This is Mae and her BFF. They’ve been tight for most of their lives. Her BFF has a new baby brother and he came home yesterday. We stopped in to take a peek at him and Mae was in AWE! She couldn’t believe how little he is. How small his hands are. And then she was a little shocked when he started crying. Mae gave him a little hug and some sugar (kiss) — and then looked at me and suggested we get going.

I think Mae would make an awesome big sister — but that’s not going to happen.

Some days…

October 20, 2012

It’s not easy getting Mae to pose for me every day. Some days it’s almost impossible. The past few weeks have been particularly tough because everyone in the house has been sick. I’m just now feeling back to normal – after nearly 4 weeks of thinking I was going to die. So – I take photographs when I can – and some days there’s never a good time. For this photo I had to ask Leah to pose with her sister – it was the only way Mae would cooperate – but just look at her – she wasn’t happy. She just said, “Dad, take the picture, I’m cold. I want to go back inside.” Fair enough. Someday, I hope you appreciate my efforts…

Hands full of dolls

September 30, 2012

Mae has the cough that I’ve had for over a week now. We decided to keep her in all day today, but that didn’t stop Mae from painting portraits, spray painting farm animals (don’t ask), creating a mult-media fairytale land, and breaking out the Russian dolls you see here in her hands. The cool thing about the dolls is they are made so a child (or adult) can use chalk to create whatever appearance they wish — the dolls are sort of like a 3D chalkboard. Mae loves them – she spent a fair amount of time creating something on each doll.

Oh — and while she was working on her projects, I was busy trying to catch up on a little of my scanning – and I volunteered to do some of Alison’s. Mae had this to say: Dad, it’s been a very long while since you used THAT scanner. (She was referring to my 35mm scanner — and she’s right, it’s been over a month since I scanned 35mm — but don’t you just hate little over-achievers who make you feel little and inadequate? 🙂 )

Cutie

September 15, 2012

She’s been helping me out trying to diagnose a light leak problem I have with a Polaroid camera – the modified 110B. I can’t figure out where the leak is coming from and it’s driving me crazy. I thought the problem was solved — forget it — I digress…

Mae is like a little assistant now. She’ll ask to see the Polaroid / Peel-apart – and she will immediately tell me if it’s good – too bright – or way too dark, dad! And you know what? She’s usually right. She’s got a great eye – and she actually comes up with some pretty good ideas for making her Mae a Day shots more interesting. She’s fun to work with. Now, I just need to teach her how to use a timer – proper agitation methods – then, I can just sit back and read a book while she develops my film!

Bath Time Antics

September 14, 2012

Bath time is always a great time to photograph Mae. She’s happy in her bubbles. I figure I have a few more good years before she locks the door on me… sigh.

Broach

September 11, 2012

There are times when I photograph her and capture a glimpse of what she’ll look like when she’s older – maybe in her teens – maybe as a young adult. She’s quite pretty. She’s most definitely smart. I shouldn’t worry, right?

Monday Monday

September 10, 2012

September 10, 2012

I took the top image, and my lovely wife sent me the second image from her iPhone this morning on her way to school with Mae. I had to post them both.

Mae loves to read. She loves going to the library. Alison went to pick Mae up from school today to give me a bit of a break, and they both decided to head off to the library. When they got home, I read a few of Mae’s new books for her while we sat on the porch (in return for letting me take a quick snap of her – fair deal, I think).

Mae also loves pink and purple. Can’t you tell? 🙂

A side technical note: I used some pretty expired Polaroid 3000 to take the first image. I didn’t think it would work out. I found some for not a whole lot of money and took a chance on five packs of the stuff – I’m glad I did. It’s nice looking film, and I’m sure it was just stellar when it was fresh. Film – my addiction – is fading fast, but I’ll keep shooting it until one of both of us finally croaks.
