New Accessories

She’s such a girlie-girl. I don’t mind really, but sometimes I wish she’d come down in the morning wearing a black t-shirt and jeans with holes in them… I may want to rethink that once she’s a teenager…

Mae went to daycare today while I helped finish up with painting Mae’s classroom. I’m really happy I decided to volunteer last year. I remember having to fill out a form for Mae’s teacher, and there was box asking if I’d be interested in volunteering – and, if so, what day. I remember checking the box and writing in – any day will work. I honestly didn’t think I’d be asked – but now that I know Mae’s teacher pretty well, I’m not surprised she snagged me as a volunteer right away. The truth is, without volunteers in the classroom, teachers simply can’t see to the needs of all the students. No way.

This year, I’m stepping things up a bit – I’ll be there twice a week. I know Mae will be happy (and do her best to persuade me to stay for three or four days – if not all five!), and I really get a kick out of learning something about each of the kids. It’s not easy. My sister is a Kindergarten teacher, too — and I remember going down to help out once. Oh man. Teachers simply don’t get paid enough. The corporate job I was doing at the time was tough, but a cakewalk compared to what teachers do daily. Respect.

In other news, Mae is happy it was her mama’s last day of work today. It was time for a change – a change I thought she should have made long ago. Alison will take some time off – hopefully, the rest of the summer – and then go back to something more challenging and rewarding. I’m looking forward to the time we’ll have together, just the two of us — and as a family. The best part – Mae won’t have to cry each morning for her mama to stay home from work…
